Ad hoc is our media and miscellaneous podcast where we get a bunch of tech geeks together, put them in front of mics, hit record, and then chat with them about movies, TV shows, video games, comics and books, and other popular, nerdy things. In this episode, Guy English, Georgia, Dave Wiskus, and Rene Ritchie pretty much do to Man of Steel what the Man of Steel did to Metropolis in Chris Nolan, David Goyer, and Zack Snyder's reboot of the Superman franchise.

How to download photos from Dropbox directly to your iPhone or iPad camera roll

If you use Dropbox to store photos and save space on your iPhone or iPad, there may come a time when you want to share those photos to a social network or with a friend. In order to do so, you'll most likely have to save them to your camera roll first.

As it happens, Dropbox gives you an easy way to do this. Here's how:

Launch the Dropbox app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
Find the photo that you'd like to download to your camera roll in your Dropbox app.
Click on the Download button in the lower right hand corner.
Now tap on the option for Save to Photo Library.
The photo will export directly to your iPhone or iPad camera roll.

Once the export is done you can hop right into your Photos app and upload it to whatever service you'd like.

From twit to tweet: How Twitterrific helped Twitter get its verb - and bird - on

Last week the word "tweet" was added to the Oxford English Dictionary. Craig Hockenberry, a principle of the Iconfactory, co-creator of Twitterrific, and iMore hall of famer, gave some background as to its origins on his blog, Furbo.org:

It still feels strange to hear a word I helped create be mentioned over and over again in the media. It’s a great word to go along with a great service, and in the end, I’m just happy we’re not calling each other twits!

More than just the word "tweet", the Iconfactory and Twitterrific are responsible for the bird and a remarkable amount of Twitter's common branding and popular identity. The whole story is charming and enlightening, and a rare glimpse back at the very incommon beginnings of something that now seems so commonplace.

Portland's New Streetlights Are Psychedelic, Carnivorous Plants

If you've seen one streetlight, you've pretty much seen them all. They're important, sure, but they're usually not much to look at. The lamps that popped up across Portland are a little bit different. A little more like giant, carnivorous plants.

You can now rent Adobe Photoshop for $35 per month, CS 5.5 available soon

Rejoice! No longer will you have to fork over $700 for a Photoshop CS5 license! Adobe has unveiled a new subscription scheme where you can rent the entire Creative Suite, or individual packages, by the month, or for an entire year.

Adobe Photoshop can be yours for $35 per month if you agree to rent it for 12 months, or $49 per month if you require its services for a shorter period. Dreamweaver can be had for even cheaper, at just $19 per month. The entire Master Collection is still rather expensive, though, at $125 per month.

Today, Adobe also ushered in the release of Creative Suite 5.5, and simultaneously upped its release cycle from 18 months to 24 months. This means, if you rent Photoshop for two years, it's actually the same cost as buying it outright. There's no rent-to-own option, though -- so you wouldn't have access to the cheaper upgrade price once Creative Suite 6 rolls around next year. Still, if you need access to Photoshop, After Effects or Premiere for a one-time project, the new rental scheme could be exactly what you're looking for.

In other news, Adobe has announced that it will be launching three rather exciting iPad apps that work in conjunction with Photoshop: Eazel, Nav, and Color Lava. Eazel lets you five-finger paint on your iPad, and export the result into Photoshop; Nav acts as some kind of workspace, brush and menu extension, and the hopefully named Color Lava is a paint mixing palette. The apps are expected to appear in the App Store in the next 30 days.
