Intel posts a short film about SSDs and the folly of not using them

Intel cares about you. It cares that your data is safe and secure in a sturdy storage silo of the solid state variety. In order to enlighten you on the dangers that old and dusty magnetic hard drives pose, it has kindly fashioned out a short film detailing graphically the fate of your 1s and 0s when they're kept on an HDD that suffers an unexpected impact. It's atmospheric, thrilling stuff, which we dare not spoil for you here. We'll just say it ends on a pretty hilarious note and point you to the video below.

Google working on a face recognition app that leads to your personal info? (update: Google says 'no')

Before we all get in a huff about this, Google has been very eager to point out that the facial recognition app it's developing will work on a strictly opt-in basis. That means if you don't want it to scan all of Facebook, Flickr and the rest of Google's vast hoards of internet knowledge to find you, identify you, and collate your name, phone number and email address into a handy data sheet, it won't. Okay? So relax now, everything's fine. Seriously though, Google's latest research venture sounds like a dashing stride into a minefield of privacy concerns as it aims to use people's faces to instantly identify them and provide any salient info about them. Project leader Hartmut Neven, whose company Neven Vision was gobbled up by Google in 2006, says the team is being very cautious in how it addresses people's rather apt apprehension, but he insists there's actually great value in having a face-recognizing and data-mining app. Great value for the app's user, perhaps, but we'd rather just stick to business cards, if you ask us.

Update: Google has reached out to clarify that there are no plans to introduce functionality of this sort yet, not without "a strong privacy model in place." More importantly, however, the linking of facial recognition to personal data is described as "inventions of the reporter" rather than something the company's actively pursuing.

IE9 and Firefox 4 post top marks in Web browser power use comparison

Over on the Internet Explorer Blog, Microsoft has posted results from an extensive comparison of the top five Web browsers. The goal: to determine whether Internet Explorer 9, Firefox 4, Chrome 10, Safari 5, or Opera 11 is able to squeeze the most life out of your laptop's battery.

A baseline was determined with test systems sitting idle, and then browsers were pointed at about:blank, a news site, the HTML5 Galactic demo, and the IE9 fish tank demo. Perhaps unsurprisingly, IE9 came out on top -- though Firefox 4 was a very close second on nearly every test. As you can see, the other browsers didn't necessarily fare quite as well, with Google Chrome, Safari, and Opera all posting significantly worse scores. In Opera 11's case, a laptop battery would last over one hour more with Internet Explorer 9 installed.

But what we'd really like to know is where did Microsoft find the dilithium crystals required to run a Galactic Total Power Consumption test...

Public Bike Pumps Could Civilize Cities

One of the things I like best about visiting the U.S is the public water fountains. It’s a simple thing, but it means that you can drink free (and in New York, delicious) water whenever you like. They’re even in the airports, which means that you can take an empty bottle through the security theater [...]

CyanogenMod 7 RC4 hits; brings big fix for all devices

cyanogenmod7

Only just a few days ago we saw RC3 of CyanogenMod7 rolling out, and today they are releasing RC4. Since RC2 we have seen mainly bug fixes in each update, but this time they have brought a big fix for Open GL (EGL specifically) from the AOSP. Additionally, the Nook Color version has gained hardware acceleration, but unfortunately the Nexus One still may have the call audio bug, and the EVO still has minor GPS issues. Enough of the jabbering, get to downloading, hit up ROM Manager, or CyanogenMod to get your download started. [CyanogenMod]

AutomateIt is a light-weight and free Tasker clone for Android

AutomateIt automation app for AndroidAutomateIt, as the name so handily implies, is an automation app for Android. The basic premise is that you have events, such as receiving an SMS or a certain time of day, which are triggers. These triggers then fire off one or more actions, which can start applications, set your phone's volume, and so on.

AutomateIt is, basically, a free version of Tasker, but with a much-reduced set of triggers and actions. For all but the most advanced users, however, AutomateIt will be just fine. There are triggers for various battery levels (you might want to shut off Wi-Fi only when you get below 25% battery), or you can have it track your location with GPS and start an application when you leave your home/office.

To download AutomateIt, and to see complete list of triggers and actions, head over to AutomateIt on the Android Market. There's a QR code after the break.

How to edit your comments on Facebook

Editing Facebook comments
Facebook recently rolled out an update to its commenting system. Now, instead of pressing Comment, you simply press the Enter key to save a comment. More excitingly, however, Facebook silently rolled out another new feature at the same time: you can now edit comments!

If you comment on a friend's status update, link or photo, you can now press the 'X' in the top right corner to edit it. Your comment instantly turns into a text box where you can alter what you've written; then just press Enter to save it again.

There are some caveats, though! First, if someone comments after you, your comment is locked; you can still delete it, but you can't edit. Second, there seems to be some kind of time limit on editing. The editing window might be as short as 60 seconds. Still, for those of you that have 'accidentally' submitted comments by pressing Enter, the ability to edit is a godsend.

It's also worth noting that everyone still gets email (and SMS!) notifications when you comment, and when you edit comments.

Samsung Continuum ROM Clean Continuum DL17 [From the Forums]

Clean Continuum DL17

The Samsung Continuum gets an awesome treat from Android Central forums adviser and ROM developer Adrynalyne with his Clean Continuum DL17 ROM.  Samsung Fascinate users should be familiar with Adrynalyne's work, and they'll all tell you it's great.  This has carried over to the Continuum.  The short list of features:

  • Deodexed, Debloated, DeBinged, and mostly, DeTouchwizzed.
  • Visual voice mail is gone, voice mail button in the dialer now opens Google Voice.
  • Verizon Wireless carrier banner replaced.
  • Messaging app will not longer do multi-part messages, but instead converts to MMS automatically once the 160 character mark is hit.
  • GPS has been tweaked.
  • ADW Launcher installed as default

Adrynalyne says that while this is an early beta, it still should be perfectly stable.  It's great to see the Android community at work on phones that don't have the spotlight, and if you're rocking a Continuum you owe it to yourself to have a look.  Check it out in the forums.  Thanks, Adrynalyne, for the hard work!
