Opera 11.10 gets HTML5 File API support, IMAP improvements

opera 11.10
The crew in Oslo keeps plugging away at Opera 11.10, and the latest snapshot build includes a number of improvements to Opera's built-in email client -- as well as HTML5-related additions.

On the IMAP front, Opera now supports special folders like sent items, spam, and trash. It also better handles duplicate items in Gmail -- such as those which appear in all mail and under your custom labels.

Opera 11.10 now partially supports the HTML5 File API as well, which means your favorite Web apps (like Gmail) may soon begin adding Opera to the list of supported browsers.

You can download the latest Opera 11.10 snapshot for Windows, Mac, or Linux from the official release post.

Update: The Opera 11.10 RC is now available, as pointed out by SlashZaku in the comments. Thanks!

Canalys: HTC nips Apple, Samsung to become top smartphone vendor in US for Q3 2011

Boo! No, that's not your doorbell ringing again, that's HTC popping out of nowhere in order to toss a Nah-nah-nah-boo-boo in the direction of Samsung and Apple. Just days after Strategy Analytics published a global smartphone shipment report for Q3 2011, Canalys -- another formidable name in the sector -- has pushed out a report of its own. Not surprisingly, the global figures line up almost precisely with what we'd already heard, with Samsung's Q3 numbers rising above those from Apple, Nokia and the rest of the industry. The difference here, however, is the focal point on the US of A. Here in the States, Taiwan's own HTC is pulling rank; the aforesaid handset maker edged out Apple and Samsung by shipping 5.7 million smartphones.

All told, it owned "around a quarter of the market," with Samsung (4.9 million) claiming the second spot and Apple (4.6 million) pulling in for the bronze. Conspicuously absent from the leader board? RIM, which saw its volume decline 58 percent from a year ago and its US market share sink from 24 percent in Q3 2010 to just 9 percent this quarter. Our take? HTC (and Samsung, from a global perspective) best enjoy it while the quarter lasts -- as soon as the iPhone 4S and Nokia's spate of Windows Phone devices start figuring in, we're guessing that the top spots will be completely up for grabs all over again.

Microsoft releases sexy Bing app for iPad

It's still a bit odd seeing Microsoft deliver apps for Apple's mobile platform. And it's even stranger still to see one as sexy as the new Bing app for iPad, which brings a slick, immersive search experience to Apple's tablet.

Just as a regular search on bing.com will, the Bing app for iPad tailors the results it displays based on what you're searching for. There are loads of custom views, covering everything from movies and maps to weather and shopping. The app also offers a heads-up display of currently trending searches, complete with related images, which is an iPad-exclusive feature.

Navigation is a breeze thanks to multitouch controls, allowing users to flick or swipe through results. And while the development team refers to the app as "touch and decide," Bing Voice Search is also built in -- making it easy to start a query without using the iPad's on-screen keyboard.

The Bing app for iPad is available for download now from the App Store.

Google Cloud Print comes to HP ePrint printers

hp google cloud print
HP has become the first major OEM to deliver support for Google Cloud Print in retail-boxed printers. In an official release, HP announced that its ePrint-enabled printers are now fully Cloud Print compatible. Just sign in to your Google account, pick your HP ePrint device, and you're ready to fire off a print job from anywhere you've got Internet access. Well, as long as your app supports Cloud Print as well -- like Gmail and Google Docs, for example.

We're curious, though -- how many of you are still printing? Like our pals at Engadget, our printers have been mostly gathering dust for the last few years.

Dropbox for Teams offers businesses copious amounts of sharable storage

Dropbox for Teams
Dropbox is an indispensable part of many a computer users' arsenal, including several here at Engadget. But, the company hasn't had a viable option for businesses who would have an obvious use for a tool that allows you to easily sync files between PCs, share them amongst users and always have backups in the cloud. The boys and girls at the Y Combinator startup know that there's lots of money to be made in the enterprise space and that's why they've unveiled Dropbox for Teams. The general experience is the same, but rather than individually managed chunks of storage, teams share one large repository, starting at 1TB for five users. The base plan costs $795 a year and additional users, which also includes 200GB of storage, can be tacked on for $125 annually. The business offering also includes special tools for administrators to add or delete users and dedicated phone support. Check out the full PR after the break.

Barnes & Noble readying themselves for new Nook Color?

Android Central

The Nook Color is somewhat of an Android phenomenon, and according to the folks over at The Digital Reader the sequel is potentially just around the corner.

Sources close to them from Barnes & Noble have previously leaked information regarding a successor to the popular e-Reader. Now though they go one better and claim that there will be a "major announcement from the company" on November 7.

One of the sources goes on to detail changes that are to be made in-store, with a "Nook boutique" to be created complete with LED TV's, and touch screen POS systems.

There are no spec's mentioned, or for that matter, no Android mention but with the development that Barnes & Noble have put into the platform there's no reason to believe they wouldn't return again with an Android offering. We'll just have to wait it out on this one, but with the Kindle Fire due it isn't such a crazy thought that Barnes & Noble would try and beat them to market with a new Nook.

HTC EVO Design 4G hands-on

HTC EVO Design 4G

I've got to hand it to HTC. They continue to make beautiful-looking devices, one after another, with nary an end in sight. The latest in their lineup is the EVO Design 4G, a solid, mid-range phone that carries Sprint's EVO branding.

At first glance it looks like, well, an EVO. Not quite big enough to be the original EVO 4G and not as bulky as the current EVO 3D, the Design 4G is the thinner, lighter sibling in the EVO line. And that's ok.

The aluminum unibody design is one of the best features about this phone, not just aesthetically, but because it keeps everything feeling solid while still unbelievably light. If HTC could pull it off, I'd hope to see more phones (and more powerful phones) come out with this design more often.

The 4-inch screen is bright and clean, and doesn't leave much to be desired. Because the screen is more convervatively sized, the phone itself feels great in the hand and doesn't require any of the awkward thumb/palm shifts larger phones do.

The 1.2GHz processor gets the job done, but there's still mad lag when the phone's first turning on. That's no surprise, and I'm glad to see "less powerful" phones that still run really well. (Remember when a 1.2GHz processor was the deal?)

There's not much more I can say right now, so I'll just leave you guys (and gals) with a whole bevy of shots and a hands-on video after the break.

British royal family announces iOS and Android wedding app

William and KateTo celebrate the imminent marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Royal Collection will release an Android an iOS app that chronicles the last seven royal marriages, including Queen Victoria's marriage to Prince Albert in 1840.

Ironically, the app won't actually feature anything to do with William and Kate's marriage -- rather, it will focus on the "tradition, splendor and romance" that are intrinsic to British royal marriages. "[The app] will share the stories of past royal weddings and offer a wealth of historical context for the ceremony on April 29."

Unfortunately, the app, which has been lumbered with the fantastically creative name of 'Royal App,' won't be available until April 18 -- just 11 days before Kate's big day. It won't be free, either: it'll cost the rather princely sum of £1.79, or three of your Tea Party-loving dollars. The money will go to the Royal Collection, though, which is a good cause!
