Minutemen: History Lesson Part II [Video]

At decision points in my life, I often ask: What would Mike Watt do? Watt was the bass player for the minutemen and firehose, and more recently the Stooges. He's also a prodigious songwriter. This is scientist rock. More »

Razer Tiamat 7.1 delayed again, gamers everywhere realize they have other headset options

Tiamat 7.1
The so-called first true 7.1 surround sound headset is inching towards vaporware status. Razer's Tiamat 7.1 was originally supposed to land sometime in Q4 of 2011 but, as the holiday season approached, the company regretfully informed potential customers that the gaming gear would not ship until the end of January. Well, it's the 31st and the Tiamat is still no where in sight. In fact, Razer just issued yet another notice of delay on its blog. The company promises it'll ship the headset in February, but having been burned once already, we're wondering who is still holding out hope of getting their pale button mashers on a set. Hit up the source link to find out what sort of apologies (including a free t-shirt!) Razer is offering to satiate its frothy-mouthed customers.

The Modern Lantern Brightens Rooms Without Hogging Outlets [Video]

Rearranging your furniture is easy enough but your lighting tends to stay where its been since you moved in—limited by the location of available outlets. Or it was limited at least, until the folks at Modern Lantern designed a table lamp that doesn't need them. More »

Japanese carrier 'blames Android app' for recent downtime

Docomo Logo

Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo has reportedly identified "Android app traffic" as the cause of a recent network outage which affected some 2.5 million of its customers. According to Japanese newspaper Nikkei, DoCoMo did not identify the app, aside from saying that it offered "free voice services."

The application apparently caused DoCoMo's network to buckle by sending out "control signals" rather than VOIP data. These are small amounts of data which are periodically exchanged between a smartphone app and a remote server, in order to check that the app is still running, and/or communicate any status changes.

DoCoMo intends to ask Google to limit the frequency at which Android sends these control signals, in order to reduce the strain on its network. However, the solution may not be quite so simple. The nature of Android means that an OS-level "fix" for DoCoMo's complaint would take months to roll out, if it were even possible. And if the app in question is a third-party offering from the Android Market, there's nothing Google can do to fiddle with its internal workings besides blocking DoCoMo customers' access to the app.

However, Google has shown a willingness to selectively block Android Market access to apps with which carriers have issue, notably tethering apps in the U.S. And then there was last year's strikingly similar case of YouMail and T-Mobile, which saw the app unceremoniously pulled from the Market at the request of the U.S. carrier. Whatever happens, we'll be watching with interest to see how Google deals with DoCoMo's complaint.

Four ways Android is doing exactly what it's supposed to do

Android

You say tomato, I say tomahto. You say potato, I say potahto. And that's where we stand on the state of Android, at least compared to Mark Spoonauer of Laptopmag. Mark, whose opinion we certainly respect, tonight in a "Spoon Fed" blog post titled "Why Android is broken," highlights four reasons why he believes Android is "more vulnerable than ever," despite activating more than 700,000 devices a day.

So is Android really doomed? At the rate it's been growing, can it be doomed? Let's break down Mark's points.

Windows 8 App Store images leaked?

windows 8 app store
Windows 8 images continue to leak onto the Internet, despite Microsoft's wallpaper-based pleas to those with access to the early releases. Today's installment courtesy CNBeta shows the upcoming Windows App Store, which will likely feature prominently in Windows 8.

We've got our doubts about the authenticity of the image. In addition to showing several of the built-in games which already ship with Windows, Opera is listed -- and a competing browser seems like an odd inclusion this early on. Of course, with the browser ballot still in place in the EU for quite some time, Microsoft would probably need to include rivals like Opera and Firefox to stay out of trouble. We're also not sure why Clickgamer is shown beneath Angry Birds instead of Rovio -- the game's actual publisher.

It's still early, of course, so it's entirely possible that the Windows App Store image is genuine but merely using placeholder images and text for now. Anyone else thinking Windows Marketplace might be a more logical name? You know, to keep things consistent with Windows Phone and keep Apple's legal eagles at bay.

Lark Wristband Reveals the Best Lifestyle Choices For a Good Night’s Sleep

The Lark isn't the first wearable device to track one's sleep patterns, but the system adds a clever coaching element that other sleep trackers don't include. It's an important addition, as competing devices tend to smother the user in sleep data, but don't provide many tools to make sense of the data in an actionable way.
